BYD has marked a significant milestone in its European expansion strategy with the unveiling of the Dolphin G DM-i on Tuesday, a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback that represents the Shenzhen-based automaker’s first vehicle designed specifically for European customers rather than adapted from an existing Chinese-market model. This distinction underscores a maturing approach to international markets, as BYD moves beyond simply exporting domestic designs toward creating products tailored to the unique preferences and requirements of overseas consumers. Prices will be announced in June, with first deliveries scheduled for autumn 2026.
The dimensions of the Dolphin G DM-i reveal a vehicle thoughtfully positioned for European tastes. Measuring 4,160 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width, the car is 130 mm shorter and 55 mm wider than the electric Dolphin currently sold in Europe. These proportions place it squarely within the competitive B-segment, positioning it alongside established players such as the Renault Clio and Volkswagen Polo. Notably, BYD claims the Dolphin G will distinguish itself as the only supermini in Europe to offer plug-in hybrid technology, carving out a unique niche in a crowded and fiercely contested market segment.
The strategic significance of this purpose-built approach was articulated by BYD executive vice president Stella Li, who spoke at the Financial Times’ Future of the Car summit earlier this month. She described the Dolphin G as “the first product we are designing purely for Europe, for overseas markets, because there’s no interest in China,” while adding that more region-specific models would follow. This candid acknowledgment reflects a sophisticated understanding of divergent market demands and signals BYD’s intention to invest meaningfully in products engineered for the specific needs of European drivers.
While full powertrain specifications have not yet been confirmed, the Dolphin G DM-i is expected to share its underpinnings with the Atto 2 DM-i, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver a combined output of 156 kW. The vehicle is anticipated to offer two lithium iron phosphate battery options of 7.8 kWh and 18 kWh, providing between 40 and 90 km of electric-only range under WLTP conditions. Perhaps most impressively, BYD has confirmed that the Dolphin G DM-i’s combined range exceeds 1,000 km on a full battery and full tank, a figure that addresses range anxiety while offering the flexibility of hybrid operation for longer journeys.
Beyond its consumer appeal, BYD’s strategic embrace of plug-in hybrid technology serves an important commercial purpose related to trade policy. The European Union’s additional tariffs of up to 35 percent apply specifically to battery-electric vehicles imported from China, but these tariffs do not extend to hybrids or plug-in hybrid vehicles. By focusing on PHEV technology, BYD can navigate this regulatory landscape more advantageously, maintaining competitive pricing while continuing to grow its presence across European markets. This calculated approach demonstrates the company’s adaptability in responding to evolving geopolitical and economic conditions.
BYD’s commitment to the European market extends well beyond product design to encompass local manufacturing capabilities. The company is constructing a manufacturing plant in Szeged, Hungary, where it plans to produce the Atto 2 DM-i and the Dolphin Surf EV during 2026. The Dolphin G is likely to join that production line, a move that would further strengthen BYD’s local footprint while potentially mitigating tariff concerns and reducing logistical complexities associated with importing vehicles from China. This investment in European manufacturing reflects a long-term vision for sustained growth and integration within the region.
A full launch event is scheduled for June, when comprehensive details including UK pricing, equipment levels, and complete technical specifications will be disclosed. According to reporting by The Independent, a starting price around £23,000 would position the Dolphin G between BYD’s existing UK offerings, making it an accessible and competitively priced option for budget-conscious buyers seeking advanced hybrid technology. Adding to the anticipation, the Dolphin G will make its UK public debut at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed from 9 to 12 July, providing an ideal stage to showcase the vehicle to enthusiasts and prospective customers alike. As BYD continues to refine its European strategy, the Dolphin G DM-i stands as a clear statement of intent, demonstrating the automaker’s willingness to invest in purpose-built products and local manufacturing to capture a meaningful share of one of the world’s most competitive automotive markets.
