Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google event on Wednesday, adding a Health Guardian safety bundle and satellite positioning it says is twice as accurate, with Australian sales starting on 20 August from A$649.

The watch comes in 41mm and 45mm sizes at A$649 and A$699, with LTE versions at A$829 and A$879, and in the United States from US$399. Battery life reaches 30 hours on the smaller model and 40 hours on the larger one with the always-on display enabled, running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Health Guardian is the headline change on the Pixel Watch 5. The bundle groups breathing emergency detection, which calls emergency services if it detects a dangerously low breathing rate over several minutes, with loss of pulse detection, fall and crash detection, and satellite-based emergency messaging outside mobile coverage.

Alongside the safety net sit monthly trend reports on blood pressure, sleep breathing and insulin resistance. Some of those features require the Google Health Premium subscription at US$9.99 a month, and breathing emergency detection starts in the European Union and select markets first.

Reviewers who handled the watch at the event rated the safety stack above Apple’s. “Google has entered a league of its own when it comes to on-wrist smartwatch safety tech, from Breathing Emergency Detection to Loss of Pulse,” wrote Dan Bracaglia, senior fitness and wearables writer at Tom’s Guide.

Bracaglia noted Apple opened this territory with fall detection on the Series 4 in 2018, but argued that in 2026 Google’s health and safety features “far surpass what Apple offers.” The breathing feature reads the heart rate sensor, accelerometer and barometric altimeter together to decide when to call for help.

The GPS claim rests on software rather than new radios. Google says positioning is twice as precise as the Pixel Watch 4 through 3D building models and atmospheric corrections, while the underlying hardware is largely unchanged.

Gemini also moves further onto the wrist. The watch processes some voice commands on-device without a phone connection, so timers and workout controls respond faster and keep working offline, and it adds generative watch faces along with AI coaching folded into workouts.

The subscription is the catch Australian buyers will weigh. Google Health Premium costs US$9.99 a month or US$99 a year, and it gates several of the trend reports that separate the watch from cheaper rivals.

Against Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9, the Pixel costs more and leans harder on subscriptions. The Galaxy Watch 9 starts at US$379.99 with no subscription for its health scores, but its blood pressure feature needs cuff calibration, where Google’s blood pressure trends work without one. Both watches put an AI assistant on the wrist with raise-to-talk gestures, though only the Pixel answers basic commands offline.

Battery testing favours Google’s hardware. Yahoo‘s comparison measured the Galaxy Watch 9 at about 26 hours in real-world use against its 30 hour claim, while last year’s Pixel Watch 4 ran 56 hours in the same testing, well past its official rating. Samsung counters with MIL-STD-810H durability certification that the Pixel lacks.

The watch itself comes in Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon, with a Smart Wake alarm that times wake-ups to sleep cycles joining the health tools. Its domed 3,000-nit circular display matches the Galaxy Watch 9’s flat panel for peak brightness, and the rotating crown carries over from earlier models.

Australian pre-orders are open through the Google Store, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and the major carriers, and Google has also announced a Stephen Curry special edition. The Pixel Watch 5 goes on sale in Australia on 20 August, with general availability in the United States following on 3 September.
